Beaverton, OR (29 June, 2005) – Nike is now accepting nominations for the Fifth Annual Casey Martin Award.
What: 2005 Casey Martin Award
Who: Nike's annual Casey Martin Award recognizes an individual for his or her courage to pursue a sport of choice despite challenges or barriers—whether physical, mental, societal or cultural. As well as receiving special recognition, the recipient will present a grant award of $25,000 to a qualified nonprofit organization of his or her choice.
Criteria for Nike's Casey Martin Award:
• Individual of any age with a disability as defined by the Department of Justice
• Individual has pursued a chosen sport to a level of success despite challenges (physical, psychological, societal or cultural)
• Individual has taken a personal and public stand, as a role model and advocate, to support and inspire others with disabilities to pursue and excel in sport
• If selected, nominee must be available the first week of November 2005 to travel to Nike's World Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon (award recipient will be notified of specific date)
Why: The award is presented in honor of professional golfer Casey Martin, who succeeded in his sport while overcoming challenges posed by a rare circulatory condition. Martin stood up for his rights and those of other athletes with disabilities by fighting for and winning legal permission to ride a golf cart during competition.
When: Nominations must be received by Monday, July 11, 2005.
